Teaching Online

Lately I have thought a lot about teaching online. This class (EME 5050) has sparked my interest in virtual school. I have even researched the virtual school for the county I live in. It is called Volusia Virtual School. You can find out more about it by going to www.volusiavirtual.org . Students can enroll for free and choose either full time (K-12) or part time (Grades 9-12). I think it would be a great experience to teach online. I have many great resources now through this class to help me get started.

The only thing I am concerned about is that when I researched employment opportunites I noticed that the employer would prefer to hire teachers with at least 3 years teaching experience. Although I am still going to apply, it makes me wonder why they would have that requirement. The only way to gain experience is for someone to hire you. I am hopeful that I can get into a virtual school and begin teaching online.

I would love the opportunity to use the new technology I have learned through this course. I have also looked into the Florida Virtual School and am going to continue checking for employment vacancies. One thing that I think would be a great perk to teaching online is that I could work from home. Although I do not have children yet, I would love to be able to stay home when I do. Now is the time to start working towards the goal of teaching online.

Anyone have any thoughts on virtual schools?

  1. I'm currently a teaching assistant here at UCF and I'm overseeing three online course. I'm also thinking about teaching online. I've heard alot of great things about online teaching in Florida through Florida virtual school. A classmate of mine in another class does it for high school science and he was telling me about all the innovative gadgets he's about to use to better service his students. One gadget that he use is the smart pen. this pen records and remembers everything he writes and he's able to create step by step examples of equations and upload it to his online class. the students can then see his examples as if it was being done live in a face-to-face class.

Good luck with applying I hope you get it and enjoy it.

  2. I too looked into teaching online (the florida virtual school), I believe they require 3 years of experience as well. I think it would be a challenge yet something interesting to teach in a virtual school since you won't be in a classroom and the students are a lot younger. I wish you the best of luck!

  3. I encourage you to explore online teaching. I've taught online Physics with FLVS for the past 7 years. If you have any specific questions just email me, kcloran@flvs.net. I thought the requirement of 3 years teaching experience was removed, but I could be wrong. Also, I believe they are hiring seasonal summer help such as grading support and adjunct teachers. This might be a great way to get your foot in the door!
    Good luck,
    Kim
